On Balance

Leila Seth was the first women Judge in Delhi High Court and the first Chief Justice of a High Court in India (Himachal Pradesh High Court). She was also the first woman to top the Bar Examinations in London.

Through this book she narrates her life filled with struggle, passion, dedication, inspiration, joy and success. Caught between family and professional life she narrates her entire life and the shift after getting enrolled in Law.

The book takes us on an inspiring journey of struggle and hard work that one faces (specially women) while entering into any profession specially law. From having no toilets for females in Court premises to a better infrastructure now (at-least in the High Courts and Supreme Court) a lot of development has taken place now but there are still a lot of things that needs to be addressed.

Relevance of the title of this biography can be found in the last chapter of this book. You will also find a reflection of characters of Vikram Seth’s “A Suitable Boy” if you have read that book.

Biographies and autobiographies are my personal favourites when it comes to books. I would recommend everyone specially law students to go through this book.

This book has also been published in Hindi titled “Ghar Aur Adalat”.
